چکیده

This work deals with lignin antioxidant properties in polypropylene. We extracted and characterised 15 lignin samples from various botanical origins (wheat straw and wheat bran) using different processes of extraction and using industrial Kraft lignins fractions (Westaco). These lignins were incorporated in polypropylene (1% weight). We underline the effect of lignin solubility in PP on stabilisation behaviour. The solubility in polypropylene is very low; as a consequence, classically important factors such as phenol content and intrinsic reactivity of the molecule are less important than factors making easier solubility. Solubility in PP could not be measured directly; a morphological criterion (average dimension of lignin aggregates in the blend) has been correlated to antioxidant activity and is thought indirectly to reflect solubility behaviour. The following factors tend to improve the compatibility (blend morphology) and consequently the antioxidant activity: low molecular weight low total OH content (aliphatic+phenolic) The non-linear relation between Kraft lignin activity and its concentration in the blend has been explained by molecular weight polydispersity, and correlated to activities of Kraft fractions. # 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. In situ stabilization of polypropylene by lignin using a Ziegler-Natta catalyst

A fourth-generation Ziegler-Natta catalyst was prepared to synthesize polypropylene (PP), which was stabilized by in situpolymerization employing lignin as antioxidant. The antioxidant properties of lignin were compared with those of the commercial antioxidant Irganox 1010. The presence of lignin in the reaction medium slightly decreased the catalytic activity of the reaction. The isotacticity ...

Lignin-stimulated Protection of Polypropylene Films and Dna in Cells of Mice against Oxidation Damage

The blending of polypropylene with lignin derived from chemical wood pulp manufacture makes it possible to prepare optically transparent films (thickness 50-60μm) with acceptable mechanical properties in the absence of a commercial stabilizer. The lignin preparation in the concentration 1-2 wt% possessed the ability to act as a processing stabilizer and as an antioxidant during thermal aging of...

Recycled Polypropylene/Peanut Shell Powder Composites: Pre-Treatment of Lignin Using Alkaline Peroxide

This study investigated the performance of recycled polypropylene (RPP)/peanut shell powder (PSP) composites with untreated PSP and treated PSP with alkaline peroxide. The RPP/PSP and RPP/PSPH2O2 composites were prepared by melt mixing and compression molding at different PSP loadings (10 wt.% to 40 wt.%). The samples were characterized by processing properties, tensile properties, Fourier tran...

Influence of Residual Lignin Content on Physical and Mechanical Properties of Kraft Pulp / Pp Composites

The effect of residual lignin content on the mechanical strength and water absorption of kraft pulp/ polypropylene composites was studied. To meet this objective, hornbeam wood chips were converted to kraft pulp at three different alkalinities (15, 20, and 25%) and three different cooking times (60, 90, and 120 min). The residual lignin contents of these pulps were determined according to the T...

Green Composites Based on Blends of Polypropylene with Liquid Wood Reinforced with Hemp Fibers: Thermomechanical Properties and the Effect of Recycling Cycles

Green composites from polypropylene and lignin-based natural material were manufactured using a melt extrusion process. The lignin-based material used was the so called "liquid wood". The PP/"Liquid Wood" blends were extruded with "liquid wood" content varying from 20 wt % to 80 wt %. The blends were thoroughly characterized by flexural, impact, and dynamic mechanical testing. The addition of t...
